I Want to Take You on a Ride is a large-scale mixed-media work by Nantucket artist Cheryl Fudge exploring memory, separation, travel, and the people and places that shape us.
The work imagines a wartime love letter: a promise to someone far away that when the conflict is over, life will begin again — traveling, returning home, seeing the world, and finding a way back to ordinary happiness.
Authentic vintage black-and-white family photographs, discovered in albums from a Nantucket estate, document real lives, journeys, and generations. Fudge layers them with painted passages, handwritten text, found papers, and contemporary imagery. A sweeping hand-painted film strip moves through the composition, incorporating found images including a sailboat and giving the work a cinematic rhythm.
Together, these fragments reflect the idea that none of us comes from just one place. We are made from the people, journeys, histories, and memories that accumulate over a lifetime.
